If you're on Android and use Hangouts for SMS/MMS, follow these steps to protect yourself from the Android security bug about prefetching MMS:

In Hangouts, tap on the top left icon (the horizontal lines), go into Settings, and then pick "SMS" at the bottom of the list.

Scroll down and look for the setting that says "Auto retrieve MMS" and remove the checkmark.

  1. Google HAS provided an update for the Stagefright bug, and Nexus phones (as well as Blackphones) have already been patched.

For most other phones, the patch will have to come from the manufacturer, and very few of those are going to put the time and effort into pushing a patch for crap people already bought.

  2. No clue – in many cases, updates are pushed and installed with the phone's owner unaware. Though I imagine for something like this people would appreciate a notification to accept – give 'em that piece of mind and whatnot.

If you're running anything less than the latest and greatest phones, though, it's pretty unlikely a patch will be pushed. As I'm sure most of you have noticed over the years with phones, the makers and service carriers don't really seem to care about long-term technical support.

  3. +Brian Greene that's my understanding as well. I have already seen exploits based on this, so next week is really too late, since the exploits can erase any trace of themselves, you will really need to factory reset before getting the ota to be sure you're not compromised.
