Update on Life, and about two weeks worth of back-blog

Most of this will fall under ‘geek news’, but there’s some ‘general news’ in here too. Things from car repairs to freelance work to my latest home projects to stuff with my mp3 player to wedding plans.

Haven’t blogged for a while, sorry for my silence. Some big things have happened in the last few weeks, so here’s a run-down:

0. Wedding plans are in full swing. We found a hotel for people to stay at, and we’re going to finalize on the menu soon. Our invitations came in, so we’re getting postage together for those and have them out in the mail soon. For family and friends that haven’t yet registered, please visit our online wedding planner and register an account so you’ll have access to details about our wedding plans.

1. I’m getting the motor in my Passat replaced. My timing belt broke. Note to all readers: read your maintenance manuals!! About $4000 later, I’ll have a new motor with 15,000 miles on it instead of 91,000, which is some upgraded turbo engine they’ve been putting in the new Jettas. Hopefully I’ll get my car on Monday morning.

2. I resigned as primary developer on a big freelance project with a group based in Missouri. I’ve been seriously sleep deprived for about two months, and my work at PriceGrabber was starting to slow down, which is a bad thing. Plus, fighting the urge to nap, while typically not all that bad, but extremely dangerous when you’re commuting nearly 40 miles, is A Bad Thing ™. The money was nice until we approached their budget cap, then there was no more money but there was still an obligation to finish a few pieces of the site.

3. I’m expanding my role with Georgia Lab Rescue by maintaining their web site and making it more interactive for site visitors. They’ve been using FrontPage to maintain it, so that’ll give my fellow geeks enough insight into the work I have ahead of me. Thankfully, Macromedia Dreamweaver has a feature to clean up the webbot junk that FrontPage litters throughout pages that it generates. I’ve always preferred smaller clients with smaller infrequent needs, plus I love working with Labrador Retriever rescue groups. Too bad they’re not based in Los Angeles.

4. Heading to San Diego for some geek time with my buddy George while Elizabeth visits with one of her bridesmaids. We’ll be visiting with Marshall and Stephanie too for Sunday for their baby dedication service at church on Sunday.

5. Been having way too much fun with my iRiver H320 mp3 player … too bad they’re discontinuing it for the H10 20GB model instead. I wonder if the folks at rockbox will skip the H300 series altogether or if they’ll keep development going for the remaining H340 (40GB model of my 20GB unit) users. My latest project is to copy the tag information from my ogg and mp3 files into a MySQL database online where I’ll eventually let people make m3u play files for me for my commute to/from work. Might have a little incentive thing like people can donate $0.50 per playlist they submit and the one I choose for the day will get $1 back or something /shrug
Still ironing out interface, but basically I’m flagging each song under multiple categories/genres, so someone could make a generic playlist like “Christian/Rock” and make a playlist of hundreds of songs, or be more specific like “Canadian/Female/Solo/Alternative/Rock/AngryChick” and make me a list of Avril Lavinge and Alanis Morissette.
Note that NONE of my song files are online – they all reside on my H320 – users will simply have access to the songs I have on the unit, and generate playlists.

Think that’s it for now …
